Jakarta Officially Bans the Use of Disposable Plastic Bags

1 July 2020 08:58 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe new Governor’s Regulation in Jakarta has officially banned the use of disposable plastic bags as of Wednesday, July 1, which requires shopping mall management and traditional markets to use environmentally friendly shopping bags.

The regulation is overseen by the Governor’s Regulation No.142/2019 on the requirement of the use of environmentally friendly shopping bags and the ban on disposable plastic bags.

“Businesses or tenants must provide environmentally friendly bags that are not free,” said Andono Warih, Head of Jakarta’s environmental agency on June 10, 2020.

However, just one day prior to the regulation’s enactment, many traditional market traders have yet completely understood the new regulation, which was evident at the Palmerah Market that Tempo interviewed.

“No one has announced it. It should be widely announced and have the market’s management notified so that it would be informed to us traders,” said the owner of a traditional beverage and drug store owner in Pasar Palmerah, Zulfa Mardiah (43).

Minimarkets in the same area of Palmerah were already informed, however, with the disposable plastic bag ban being announced to each and every visitor.
