Sumatra Reintroduces Orangutan to the Mount Leuser National Park

7 July 2020 08:14 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) in a press release on July 6 announced that it has reintroduced an orangutan named Maria at the Mount Leuser National Park in the Langkat District on Saturday.

According to the conservation center head, Hotmauli, the team needed to travel five hours from the Aras Napal Elephant Patrol Unit by boat through the area’s vast rainforest lake.

Hotmauli said that the orangutan is safely released into its habitat that is far from local resident’s farms. “We hope the orangutan will no longer exit its habitat or return to people’s farms,” he said.

The orangutan ‘Maria’ was rescued by the BBKSDA on June 18, 2020, at the Besitang district. Maria had been rescued five times from areas in its vicinity after she would often go out of the intended areas and get close to people’s farms.
