Govt Mulls over Removing Institutions to Trim Bureaucracy

7 July 2020 15:05 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaAdministrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Tjahjo Kumolo said the government has started to consider the removal of state institutions or commissions in order to cut out bureaucracy that is considered excessive thus far.

Tjahjo mentioned there are 96 institutions or commissions established either via the law or governmental/presidential regulations.

“The ministry is trying to observe institutions with insignificant urgency and consider a removal,” said Tjahjo in a statement today, July 7.

He recalled 24 institutions have been eliminated throughout the era of President Jokowi since 2014. “There are now 96 institutions that we are reviewing to be possibly discharged. But, that doesn’t mean all 96 will be cut out,” said the former home affairs minister.

President Jokowi previously touched on issues related to the removal of institutions or commissions during a plenary cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace on June 18. At that time, the state head was upset over some of his ministers’ poor performance amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He had even threatened to conduct a cabinet reshuffle if necessary.
