Thousands of Sea Turtles Hatch at Raja Ampat Beach

11 July 2020 15:50 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A conservation group in West Papua’s Yenbekaki Village in East Waigeo, Raja Ampat, reported that it has released 2,000 turtle hatchlings of multiple species since June at the Warebar Beach.

Head of the Yenbekaki Village Turtle Conservation, Yusuf Mayor, explained that there are five turtle nests left at the beach which are being guarded by group members from predatory activities and poachers.

“[We predict] the turtle eggs will hatch in early August,” said the mayor on Friday, July 10.

Yusuf said that green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), Olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea), loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), and Leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea), arrive at the beach to lay eggs annually.

All of the sea turtle species mentioned above are protected under Law No.5/1990 on Conservation of Living Natural Resources and Ecosystems.
