Govt Mulls Sanctions for Health Protocols Violators

13 July 2020 12:57 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian government was mulling to impose sanctions upon violators of health protocols amid the COVID-19 pandemic in order to tighten the public discipline which President Jokowi assessed to be still low.

“The president issues orders that the policy will likely be tensed. Besides dissemination and education, sanctions will be imposed upon protocols violators,” said Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy after a limited meeting at Jakarta State Palace on Monday, July 13.

Muhadjir said that a legal umbrella on sanctions will be deliberated by related ministries and institutions. This measure is taken, he added, because Jokowi argued that the dissemination of the protocols was not adequate to attract the people to abide by the rules and comprehend the dangers of the novel coronavirus disease.

“The public is expected to understand what the President has said because it indicates that Indonesia still faces a high risk of COVID-19,” Muhadjir added.

Public education on health protocols will also be carried out further by using local languages and symbols so it will be more comprehensible. Thus, Muhadjir opined that the role of scientists, anthropologists, and sociologists, as well as universities and religious figures, is crucial in the program.
