TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The US Senate has approved the re-establishment of Indonesia-US military cooperation. Matthew Daley, US Deputy Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific, delivered this news during a meeting with Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Deputy Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs on Foreign Affairs Amin Rianom made this statement in a press conference held in Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon (18/2). During the meeting, Yudhoyono and Daley discussed matters related to Indonesia and US relations and the recent progress on security in Indonesia. Daley said that the US Senate has approved the military cooperation planned by both Indonesia and USA. We just need Congress to approve this plan, said Daley as quoted by Rianom. However, Rianom said that Daley did not explain about when the cooperation, called International Military Education Training (IMET), would take place. Yudhoyono and Daley also discussed the investigation into the killing of US citizens in Timika, Papua. Rianom quoted Yudhoyono as saying that the recent progress on the investigation came from the cooperation between the TNI, National Police and the FBI. Yudhoyono also explained about the continuing attempts of the Indonesian government to eradicate terrorism in Indonesia. We welcome support from friendly nations, including the USA, for capacity building, Rianom said. During the meeting, Daley also asked about security conditions in the province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam. Yudhoyono only stated his hope that the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) would honor the points stipulated in the peace agreement between the GAM and Indonesia. Mr. Yudhoyono said that the peace process in Aceh would hopefully continue, said Rianom. (Sri Wahyuni Tempo News Room)
