Foreign Interference in AJMI Case

28 August 2003 08:50 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The case of PT. Asuransi Jiwa Manulife Indonesia (PT. AJMI) is purely a civil case and has developed into an international problem because of Canada’s interference, according to Rahman Saleh, head of the Manulife Indonesia Communication Forum (FKKBMI). “This problem has disturbed about 4,000 [Manulife Indonesia] employees and 400,000 clients, and all of them are Indonesian citizens,” he said during a press conference held at the FKKBMI secretariat in Jakarta on Tuesday (25/6). According to Rahman, developing this case into an international problem is a kind of untrue nationalism. He went on to say that FKKBMI, which was formed on June 13, rejected nationalism issues in dealing with the Manulife case. Principally, FKKBMI respected the legal system and law enforcement, and “The Manulife case will reform the legal system in Indonesia,” added Rahman. He explained that the Manulife case has been appealed to the Supreme Court, which FKKBMI expected would play fair in handling the case, as it is related to thousands of AJMI’s employees and clients. During the legal process, Rahman said, AJMI temporarily has stopped its activities, though the court has given permission for the company to operate. However, he said, AJMI always guarantees the insurance policies of its clients. In addition, AJMI is demanding a new, independent receiver, said Rahman. He said that the previous receiver was not independent and often made comments that were damaging to Manulife. It was planned to decide a new receiver on Wednesday (26/6). “We hope the government will pay attention to Manulife’s employees and clients that have the right to receive justice in Indonesia,” said.
