Malaysia to Take Strict Action against Illegal Foreign Workers

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Malaysia is to maintain taking strict action against illegal workers, since the countrys new immigration law has now come into effective, and the law also applies to employers that hire illegal foreign workers. Malaysian Ambassador for Indonesia, Datuk Rastam Mohammad Isa, made this comment before meeting President Megawati at the State Palace on Thursday (6/2). It was a courtesy visit and did not relate to the problem of illegal Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia. Regarding the plan to deport illegal foreign workers, Rastam said that this was normal. Though he has not received explanation of the governments policies in detail, he said he was sure all illegal workers would be deported to their countries, including Indonesian workers. When he was asked about the MoU between Indonesia and Malaysia, Rastam said the joint team of both countries were still discussing this. As previously reported, the problem of illegal workers has strained relations between Indonesia and Malaysia.
