TEMPO Interactive, Denpasar, Bali:East Timorese President Xanana Gusmao say he regretts the charges against seven Indonesian Military (TNI) officers and former East Timor governor Abilio Soares. According to Gusmao, the East Timor Prosecutors Office was supposed to delay announcing the charges until he returned to East Timor. I can not accept the measure taken by the Prosecutors Office, Gusmao said at Ngurah Rai airport in Denpasar on Friday (28/2). According to him, the head of Prosecutors Office is responsible to him as the head of the state. Therefore, he was supposed to be asked first regarding the charges against the TNI officers. Moreover, the East Timorese Attorney General was in Norway at that time. However, Gusmao said, he had to respect the decision made by the Prosecutors Office as the East Timorese Law guarantees independency of the court and judges as sovereign institutions. Gusmao added that he would not revoke the decision to file charges on TNI officers as this would affect the decision-making process in other cases. (Rofiqi Hasan-Tempo News Room)
