Gerindra Admit They Want MPR Speaker Position

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PKB and Golkar are not the only parties eyeing the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) speaker position. Gerindra also has the ambition to have that position given to its politician.
Gerindra DPD chairman Sodik Mudjahid claims that giving the position to his party is part of the 'reconciliation spirit' after the presidential election.
"The spirit of reconciliation for the unity of the nation must first be shown by members of the MPR, especially political party leaders, in determining who the MPR speaker should be," Sodik said in a written statement Friday, July 19.
According to Sodik, the basics of reconciliation is to reinforce unity for the greater good.
It is for that sole reason, Sodik said, that Prabowo Subianto was willing to meet with president-elect Joko Widodo despite risks of losing supporters.
Therefore, he added, it is fitting for Gerindra to be given the MPR Speaker position, since the DPR speaker seat is already taken by PDIP as the winner of the legislative elections.
Meanwhile, Golkar said they are more eligible to get the position, considering they are the runner-up in the legislative elections. Golkar chairman Airlangga Hartarto said the party has had talks with other parties to establish an MPR package with Golkar's politician as the speaker.
