Court Rejects Jokowi's Cassation in Kalimantan Forest Fire

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Supreme Court (MA) has denied the cassation by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo et al. in the 2015 forest fire case in Central Kalimantan.
MA spokesperson Andi Samsan Nganro said the basis of the appeal submitted by the defendant could not be justified.
“Therefore, the appeal by the state or the government is rejected. So the high court’s and the district court’s rulings take effect,” said Andi at the MA building, Jakarta, Friday, July 19.
He asserted that the court’s verdict number 3555K/PDT/2018 backed the Palangkaraya District Court and the Palangkaraya High Court that the government was guilty of neglecting the fire incident that caused thick smog and affected residents.
The case emerged after Kalimantan was hit by the forest fire in 2015. Arie Rompas et al. filed a citizen lawsuit against President Jokowi, the Environment and Forestry Ministry, the Agriculture Ministry, the Agrarian and Spatial Planning Ministry, the Health Ministry, the Central Kalimantan Governor, and the Central Kalimantan Legislative Council (DPRD).
The lawsuit was filed as the government failed to deal with the forest fire in Central Kalimantan that has occurred since 1997 to date.
